Source hierarchy
We normally start with the most authoritative available source for the claim:
- Legislation, regulators, official government and public-agency material.
- Standards bodies, technical codes and recognized methodology owners.
- Original research, datasets, audited filings and direct technical documentation.
- Independent research institutions and high-quality professional analysis.
- Reputable reporting and secondary commentary for context or scrutiny.
- Vendor material for vendor-specific features, specifications and claims—clearly attributed and not treated as independent validation.
Source records
A source record may include the organization, title, URL or document path, publication and update dates, access date, jurisdiction, source type, whether it is primary or supporting, and the pages or claims it supports.
Where a source changes frequently, we record the date accessed and avoid presenting the information as timeless. Archived or local reference copies may be retained for editorial audit where lawful and practical.
Claim records
A claim record is used when a statement is material, technical, quantitative, time-sensitive or capable of affecting a professional decision. It links the claim to supporting evidence, limitations, jurisdiction, verification date and review requirement.
Fact-checking questions
- Does the source actually support the wording used?
- Is the source current enough for the claim?
- Are units, dates, geography, system boundaries and assumptions stated?
- Is a projection being mistaken for an observed result?
- Is a pilot or laboratory result being generalized to commercial deployment?
- Is a vendor claim independently corroborated where that matters?
- Could another credible source materially change the conclusion?
- Does the wording communicate uncertainty and limitations fairly?
Costs, prices and financial claims
Cost and return figures can vary by location, scale, design, financing, incentives, tariffs, labor, interconnection and operating assumptions. We identify the date, currency, unit and important boundaries where those figures are used. Illustrative models are not predictions or financial advice.
Legal, regulatory and policy information
Rules and incentives are time-sensitive and jurisdiction-specific. We use official sources where possible, identify the relevant geography and date, and avoid implying that general summaries determine eligibility or compliance for a particular reader.
Corrections and challenges
