A technically mature component can sit inside an immature supply chain, project model or regulatory pathway.
Demonstration is not repeatability
One pilot, announcement or vendor claim does not establish bankable performance across sites and operators.
Evidence quality must be visible
Profiles separate independent results, government programs, company statements, modeled potential and unresolved questions.
What qualifies for Frontier
Frontier covers technologies with credible technical or scientific foundations and potential relevance to the green economy, but without the depth of repeatable deployment evidence expected for established procurement. Inclusion is not endorsement. A profile exists because readers need a disciplined way to evaluate claims, maturity, integration requirements and the evidence needed before commitment.
A technology can be ready in one dimension and immature in another. A core mechanism may be demonstrated while manufacturing, permitting, operations, service capability or financing remain uncertain. Equally, a commercial project may use site-specific conditions that do not transfer. Frontier therefore avoids one unsupported readiness score and instead reviews several dimensions.

Use the maturity framework before the business case
The Frontier Technology Maturity Framework uses plain-language stages across technical, deployment, commercial and integration evidence. It is informed by technology-readiness practice from NASA and GAO, but it is an FGT editorial framework rather than an official assessment. The purpose is to identify evidence gaps and decision gates, not to manufacture certainty.
A project team can use the framework to ask what would need to be true before moving from monitoring to a pilot, and from a pilot to repeatable procurement. The answer may include independent test data, longer operating duration, a site study, a permitted configuration, a credible service organization, a warranty or a financeable contract structure.
How profiles handle claims
- Established evidence is supported by repeatable independent or authoritative data in relevant conditions.
- Demonstration evidence shows integrated operation but may be limited by scale, duration, site or operator.
- Company claims are attributed and used for specifications or stated plans, not as independent proof.
- Modeled performance is identified with assumptions and is not presented as observed output.
- Theoretical potential explains the mechanism or addressable opportunity without implying commercial delivery.
- Commercial evidence considers repeat contracts, delivery, warranties, operations, supply chain and financing—not only technical readiness.
Indicators worth monitoring
Useful indicators include operating hours at relevant scale, repeat projects, independently published performance, standardized testing, permitting experience, supply-chain capacity, warranty terms, service networks and evidence that cost and schedule can be repeated. For data technologies, monitor coverage, detection thresholds, validation, attribution and the ability to integrate observations into operational or regulatory workflows.
When a pilot may be reasonable
A pilot may be appropriate when the organization has a clear learning objective, a bounded consequence of failure, an evidence plan, decision gates and a route to stop or scale. It should not be used to avoid normal requirements. The pilot agreement should address data ownership, claims, publicity, safety, site restoration, cost responsibility and the evidence required for the next decision.

Scope and limitations
Frontier is not securities research, an investment recommendation, an engineering design or a prediction of commercialization. Evidence and company status can change quickly. Verify current project operation, claims, counterparties, regulations and specialist requirements before making a decision.
