Frontier Technology Maturity Framework

Resources · Frontier Methodology

The Frontier Technology Maturity Framework separates proven operation, demonstration, claims and unresolved questions for emerging green technologies.

Frontier technology diagram showing an evidence ladder, emerging technology areas, a maturity curve and proof points.
Frontier coverage is organized around evidence, maturity, uncertainty and proof points rather than hype.

Why the framework exists

Frontier technologies are often described through announcements, pilots, funding awards or laboratory milestones. Those signals may be important, but they do not always prove repeatable operating performance, bankable cost, supply-chain readiness, safe deployment or suitability for a specific project. The framework keeps those distinctions visible.

Assessment lenses

LensQuestion
Technical readinessWhat has been demonstrated, at what scale and under what conditions?
IntegrationCan the technology connect with real infrastructure, controls, supply chains and operating teams?
ReplicationHas performance been repeated beyond a single site, geology, pilot or vendor-controlled example?
EconomicsAre cost, utilization, availability and risk claims supported by comparable evidence?
Safety and regulationWhich approvals, hazards, liabilities and operating constraints remain unresolved?
Evidence confidenceIs the claim measured, independently verified, contractual, modeled, announced or speculative?

How to read Frontier profiles

  • Promising does not mean proven.
  • A pilot is not the same as repeatable deployment.
  • Cost claims need operating context and boundary notes.
  • Safety, permitting and interconnection limits may dominate project suitability.
  • Unknowns should be stated clearly rather than converted into optimistic certainty.
